Tutorial — Pair with a caregiver
This tutorial takes about 3 minutes. Both phones need DoseAlert installed and an internet connection.
The setup
We'll pair two phones so that if the patient (you) miss a dose, the caregiver (say, your daughter) gets an alert on her phone.
Step 1 — Patient: generate a pairing code
- On your phone, tap the Family tab.
- Tap Pair a caregiver.
- Enter your name (e.g. "Mom").
- Tap Generate code.
- You'll see a six-digit code (e.g.
482 193) and a countdown timer. - Read the code to the caregiver over the phone, or text it to them.
Step 2 — Caregiver: enter the code
- On their phone, open DoseAlert and tap the Family tab.
- Tap Pair with patient.
- Enter their own name (what will appear on the patient's phone).
- Type the six-digit code.
- Tap Connect.
Step 3 — Confirm the pairing
Both phones briefly show a confirmation. On the patient's phone, the caregiver's name appears in the Family tab with a green Paired status.
Step 4 — Set when alerts fire
Pairing alone doesn't send alerts. You tell DoseAlert which medications should trigger an alert to the caregiver.
- On the patient's phone, tap a medication card.
- Scroll to Reminders.
- Set Alert caregiver after to a number of minutes (start with 30).
- Save.
Repeat for any medication you want the caregiver to know about. You don't need to turn this on for every medication — just the important ones.
Step 5 — Send a test alert
On the patient's phone, back on the Family tab, tap the paired caregiver's name, then tap Send test alert. The caregiver's phone should get a "Test alert from Mom" notification within a few seconds.
If the test doesn't arrive, see Caregiver is not getting alerts.
Done
From now on, if a dose with caregiver alerts enabled is missed, the caregiver gets a push notification. They can tap Acknowledge to let you know they saw it.
Troubleshooting
- Code expired — codes last 10 minutes. Generate a new one.
- "Code not found" — double-check the code was entered correctly.
- No internet — both phones need internet during pairing only. After that, push alerts work normally.
